Sunflower sprouts

When purchasing a sprouter there are a number of things to consider.

1. Quantity: How much do you love sprouts? Some of our sprouters grow much more than others.

2. Ease of use: How busy is your lifestyle? Our sprouters range from fully automatic to hands on.

3. Versatility: Do you like variety? Some sprouters can grow more than one type of sprout at the same time.

4. Quality: Is quality important to you? All of our sprouters grow good quality sprouts, but some are better than others.

5. Cleaning: Do you like washing dishes? Some of our sprouters are easier to clean than others.

6. Budget: How much money do you have to spend? Maybe I should have put this point first!!!!!!!!

Here is a quick guide to choosing a sprouter(in point form on the right hand side), followed by the more detailed description of each.

It doesn’t get much easier. Soak your seeds for 8-12 hours in a jar or simply by putting them straight into the sprout bag, dipping the whole bag, “seeds n all” into some water. After soaking, rinse quickly with fresh water, then hang on a hook or knob, or lay it in the dish rack. You then only need to rinse them twice per day, roughly 12 hours apart by immersing the bag in a pot of pure water (preferably filtered) for at least 30 seconds.

Within 5-10 days you’ll have fresh, crunchy sprouts – too easy!!
When your sprouts are right to go, put them in a container, or put the whole bag, “sprouts n all” into the fridge where they should keep for up to 2 more weeks. After use, turn the bag inside out and flush it with warm water to clean it.

You may have noticed that this is probably my favorite piece of sprouting equipment. In this ever-increasingly complicated world it is refreshing to find something that is so simple and cheap that does exactly the job you want it to do. The very fact that it is so simple with minimal parts also makes it much less prone to damage, or losing important bits. The Sprout Bag also has excellent air circulation and drainage. This helps to minimize any mould problems that you can potentially have when growing your sprouts.

The best part of all about the bag however is the quality of sprout it produces.

The Sprout Bag - simple, cheap and effective! – Great value for money.

  • My Favourite. Simple but strong!

All Biosnacky sprouters are fairly similar in shape and function, the major differences being the size and the number of seed trays. First soak your seeds in a jar for roughly 8 hrs, drain and then lay them out evenly on the seed tray.
Seeds must be watered minimum twice daily (I usually do it when I’m getting ready for breakfast and while I’m cleaning up after dinner). To water your sprouts you need to take off the lid and pour approximately ¼ of a litre of water into the top seed tray. The water then dribbles down slowly through the red siphons to the seed tray below (This is for the 3-tier sprouter of course), until it is fully drained into the surplus water tray at the bottom. The surplus water tray must be emptied every time before you pour the water in so that it doesn’t overflow.
Tip: The excess water is good for watering your indoor plants or the garden.
This tiered design is good because it allows you to water all layers without having to do each one separately.

After about 5-10 days (depending on the sprout) you can scoop out your sprouts and put them in a sealed container in the fridge where you sprouts will last you up to 2 weeks. Mmmm – fresh sprouts for your sandwiches and salads!
You then wash the seed tray, either in the sink or in the dishwasher and then start again.

The advantages of the 3-tier sprouter is that you can either have 3 different sprouts going at any one time; or instead, you have the option of staggering your planting i.e. plant Monday, plant again Thursday, Plant the 3rd Sunday and so on, to allow a steady supply of sprouts for the family. All sprouters are designed to allow good air circulation which helps to minimize mould. Mould growth can be a problem when growing sprouts because mould loves moist conditions but doesn’t like air flow.

The other major advantage to all of these models is the price. They’re reasonably priced and they’re tough and should last for a long time if you look after them.
They are also very easy to clean, compared to other sprouters, and easy enough for the kids to have a go.

The initial set up takes about 5-10 minutes and that includes setting the timer and positioning your Easygreen Sprouter. The best spot has good natural light and somewhere to drain excess water. Our Easygreen sits on the kitchen bench in the corner near the sink.

Fill up the 5 litre hopper (water tank) with water (preferably filtered water) and then choose your seed of choice. Sprinkle your seeds in the growing tray, place it into the growing compartment and there you have it – watch them grow! Within 5-10 days you have fresh crunchy sprouts.

The real advantage of the Easygreen Sprouter is how automatic and easy it is to use. The Easygreen also does the soaking for you. For most other sprouters you need to soak your seeds in a jar of water for about 8 hours before you even plant them.

The Easygreen Sprouter grows an excellent quality sprout. You have the option to grow up to 5 different types of sprouts at a time, or to stagger growth for a continuous supply. You can grow a lot more sprouts in the Easygreen Sprouter than any of our other sprouters, and this is why it is also used commercially by some restaurants and cafes for their sprout and garnish supplies. As with any sprouter, each growing tray needs to be washed after you have taken your sprouts out. I usually give the growing compartment a wipe out every couple of weeks to keep the chamber clean.

Overall, it is by far the easiest of all of our sprouters to use and is great for those with a busy lifestyle who love their sprouts!
